MIE PREFECTURE

Where HIGASHIKISHU IS LOCATED?

Higashikishu is in the southern part of Mie Prefecture.

Although this area is accessible by JR express trains and Kintetsu trains from Osaka and Nagoya, it is an area that is not usually visited during standard sightseeing tours to Japan by tourists, especially those from Europe, and can be considered a “hidden gem” that has yet to be discovered.

The Higashikishu area is composed of five cities and towns located in the southern part of Mie Prefecture.

It is close to Ise City where Ise Jingu Shrine is located, Matsusaka City famous for its

Matsusaka beef, and Wakayama Prefecture famous for Nachi Falls.

It is accessible by JR express trains and Kintetsu trains from Nagoya and Osaka.

 Southern part of mie

The southern part of Mie Prefecture and Higashi Kishu has many old-fashioned paths that remain unchanged such as the "Iseji Route" part of the Kumano Kodo.

"Kumano” refers to the southern parts of Mie and Wakayama prefectures. The belief that one can entrust their happiness in the afterlife to the gods by visiting the “Kumano Sanzan” shrines, which originated from nature worship that revered rivers, waterfalls, and huge rocks as the abode of gods, gave birth to the faith.

The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route is the path that leads to Kumano. Along with Spain’s Santiago de Compostela, it is one of only two pilgrimage routes in the world that are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, which we are introducing today, is the “Iseji” route that connects Ise Jingu Shrine, which is the most important shrine in Japan and is also related to the Imperial Family, and Kumano Sanzan. The “Iseji” route became popular among the common people during the Edo period from about 400 to 150 years ago, as a pilgrimage to Ise Jingu Shrine from all over Japan, and it became a popular walking route. After visiting Ise Jingu Shrine, travelers aimed for “Kumano Sanzan” by walking this route. Among them, the “Iseji” route in the southern part of Mie Prefecture and Higashi Kishu has many old-fashioned paths that remain unchanged.
