Freiburg`s Cathedra is the symbol of the city. It was built from around 1200 to 1513 in the middle of the city. It is 116-meter high and described by art historian Jacob Burckhardt in 1869 as “the most beautiful spire on earth.”

The Schauinsland deserves its name - from the observation tower on the summit, when the weather is nice, there are wonderful views in all directions, over the surrounding Black Forest mountains and valleys, over the Rhine Valley to the Vosges and the Swiss Alps. The best way to reach the summit is with the Schauinslandbahn, Germany's longest circulating cable car (length: 3.6 km, height difference 746 m). The valley station is in Horben and is very well signposted from Freiburg.
